7. Juana Bormann
It is hard to imagine the horrors that went on behind the towering fences of Nazi concentration camps. We have heard plenty of stories, all heartbreaking. We have learned the history with somber faces. However, often times, the names of those responsible for such cruel acts go unspoken.
Take Juana Bormann, for instance. She was a prison guard who rotated among several different concentration camps. Upon meeting her, most might assume she is just a frail old lady. She was capable of so much more, sadly. Prisoners knew her as the “woman with the dogs,” because she was known to sic aggressive dogs on anyone, as she felt was appropriate. Victims would be left with terrible wounds. In 1945, justice was served when Bormann was tried as a war criminal. She was convicted and executed.
