Sometimes you really can find that one person who will stand by you no matter what. Maybe you’ll find it in a spouse and celebrate it with your dream wedding. But there’s also a chance that the person you can count on for a lifetime, the person who knows you sometimes better than you know yourself, is the same person who’s been standing beside you all along, Your Best Friend.
My Dear Best Friend, Here are 8 things I never thanked you for, but always meant to:
1. Always covering for me in front of my parents
God knows how many times, I’ve told them that I’ll be crashing at your house when actually I am out attending a late night office party or sleeping over at my boyfriend’s house because his parents are away (you know just Netflix & chill?) And every time, I have to go out with a bunch of people they don’t know, the mere mention of your name magically turns their disapproving nod to a smiling yes! I never thanked you for the many times when I put you on the conference and made you talk to my mum and make stupid excuses, on my account.
2. Listening to my never-ending rants
Whether it is about the bitch boss in the office or about the tinder date gone wrong, you always handle my emotional outbursts with ease and tubs full of ice-cream. You never get annoyed when I complain about how my family fails to understand me or when I sulk over how I will never meet a guy who likes me.
3. Never Judging Me
All those crazy hook ups, drunk texts and foolish fashion choices and yet you’ve never judged me. The time when I got my hair coloured blue and then red and then pink or the time I got that stupid ex’s name tattooed and joined innumerable courses thinking that this will be my calling. I will always be grateful to you for believing in me instead of judging me.
4. Lending me stuff and forgiving me even after I lose it
From lending me your car for a long drive with the cute guy and your new black dress for my graduation party to your favourite pineapple pajamas. You always let me borrow your stuff and forgive me even if I end up losing or spoiling most of it.
5. Holding Off On “I Told You So”
I have a big list of things I didn’t do right. My parents have an even bigger one. But, you never do.
There are so many things you advised me against that I ended up doing, while some were fruitful (I’ll be honest here) most weren’t. You never hold it against me or lecture me after things go wrong. You hug me tight and let it go. And, I am really thankful for that.
6. Always being honest with me
You told me every time I put on weight, the dress just didn’t look right or when you thought my boyfriend didn’t treat me right. While everyone else said it’s a dream job, you told me I won’t be happy at it because I want something different in life. You’ve always been honest with me never sugarcoating facts but always motivating me to be better.
7. Caring for me
I probably never told you but I was really scared of staying the night alone when my parents were out. Thank you for bringing in my favourite pizza and watching rom-coms with me. Even though you had an important presentation the next day, you stayed up all night. You held my hair every time I was too drunk and ended up puking and held on to me when I was acting semi-crazy after a painful break-up.
8. Doing so much for me and never expecting me to thank you for you for it.
You do so much for me every day and yet never get mad when I cancel plans or make up plans last minute. You tolerate all my silly tantrums and tell me to be independent whenever I wonder if I’ll ever find a guy who’ll love me. You plan a surprise for my birthdays and help me complete last minute assignments. You’ve clicked a thousand pictures for my Facebook DP and let me eat up your share of food. You do this and so much more and never expect a Thank You from me.
