When we were kids, we were taught certain things that we believed, easily. As we grew up, we realised that half of those things weren’t even true and the other half, we probably forgot. But today is a different day and it’s time we factor in the useless life lessons we have learnt all throughout our lives but should unlearn as adults.
1. Gender roles
The seed of patriarchy is so deeply sown that even before we are born, our gender roles are already decided. Blue is for boys and pink is for girls. A boy can be a pilot; a girl can be an air-hostess. Let the man work, and the woman cook. We’re used to living within constrained gender roles and it’s time we free ourselves from them.
2. Self-love is being selfish
Often people confuse self-love with selfish and believe us, it’s nowhere even close. Self-loving is all about taking care of your own self, spending time with yourself, making yourself feel better. A person is selfish is when they are inconsiderate and get pleasure from another person’s misery.
3. Love is all things beautiful
Love is indeed the most beautiful feeling in this world, but that’s not it. Love is also about compromise, endless arguments, sacrifice and letting go. We are taught ever since we are kids that being in love is perfect, but well, it’s not and that’s how it should be. It’s a rollercoaster of emotions, both happy and sad.
4. Happy endings
We read novels, we watch movies, we listen to songs and we almost believe that life is a fairytale with only happy endings. Well, that’s not true. You won’t necessarily have a happy ending, and the sooner you accept it the better it’ll be for you. Life is about sad endings, too, that teach you about your resilience more than anything else.
